Outline inspiration

A simple outline can create dramatic effects by either containing a group of patterns or used by itself giving distinction to a space.

Outline is seen time and time again throughout Rajasthan. Having recently returned from an incredible trip to India, the ornate designs linger in my mind. Seeing the use of an outline was one of my favorite Indian decorations. So simple yet so effective.

At Amer Fort in Jaipur, line becomes colored stripes as well as a container for the many floral patterns.

A thin double outline transforms this white small room into a standout space.

A simple carnation at the peak of the niche for emphasis.

Marie-Anne Oudejans made modern India beautiful using this same technique.

Her newly designed Villa Palladio is equally fabulous. Red is the dominant color there.

Outline decoration is everywhere in Northern India.

Here it is at Taj Ganj – a bold white on the red sandstone.

At the City Palace in Jaipur, many different colored rooms use outline as decoration. Above white lines are on a chalky powder blue.

In this room, turquoise glass outlined the shapes.

So many fantastic details in this room. The triangular bedskirt outlined in black against the green walls contrasted with red.
