Creating custom

Creating custom items to suit specific needs of various projects is one of the more fun and rewarding parts of the interior design profession.

This week was especially busy overseeing some custom projects. Headboards, furniture, and even garages.

Creating custom furniture allows for the perfect fit and color.

One of my clients is in need of a bedside table. We found a William & Mary style chest, but the size was wrong. So, we decided to make our own.

This chest inspired the new design.

We don’t have the color right yet. Above are two samples that have been created so far. The room’s wallpaper is pictured at left. Lovely hardware in an un-lacquered brass will age with time developing a nice patina.

My client created this fun collage depicting some of the items in the room.

Custom pieces can bring international touches.

My client’s garage door is undergoing a redo.

We have been making over this house to be more European. Likewise the garage door should follow suit. I love the painted doors with brass hardware seen in Spain.

Painting it black highlights the odd texture of this existing metal door. We love the black color, but not the finish. A new wooden door is on order.

We ordered some custom clavos in a beautiful antique gilt brass that will weather the Florida climate.

Newly designed lighting will replace the current lights. Hammered iron house numbers will replace the painted chicken plaque.

Custom cabinet doors add uniqueness.

Custom mousharabi panels serve as cabinet doors. They add an exotic touch.

Lattice doors add interest to the pantry in an historic Spanish revival home.

Clients love pieces made just for them.

This Lake Mary living room features numerous custom items. The cocktail table and display cabinet were made by a favorite artisan in México. The ottoman is velvet with leather fringed trim along the bottom. Not seen is a curvy sofa. These clients really enjoy the custom process. They love being involved in the design process and appreciate that items are one of a kind made just for them.

Next up is a bench to tuck under the stairwell.

A dragon-themed linen repeats the theme of the Chinese carpet. Similarly, using two trims add to the bohemian flair.
