Never enough books

Books offer an escape or comfort when that is needed, making them a perfect gift to give.

Gift guides are falling flat this year, at least for me. Current events make shopping a little trivial. Last year I enjoyed creating a gift guide based on the ideas of some of my creative friends. This year a book list seems more appropriate.

Design books always top my list.

My favorite new book is Secret Houses Living in Menorca. Spanish style is seductive. Menorca was to be the location of our last vacation, however; due to work and children’s busy schedules the trip was not to be. This book served as my introduction to the island.

Asymmetrical architecture, white stucco, and clay tiles add up to a heavenly house.

The author’s home includes many fabrics by Lisa Fine Textiles. Above is the charming Pomona in the tobacco color way. All photos above by Karel Balas.

The book of the multi-talented Federico Forquet came out a few years ago. As there is much to see within the pages, I am still making my way through this lovely book.

This sunroom has sprung up in at least three variations.

The latest issue of Cabana featured an ad from Liberty using one of their fabrics on Mr. Fouquet’s sofa. The same Now-ontheocean tables sit in front.

My mother is receiving A Year in the French Style by Antoinette Poisson. This company makes gorgeous domino papers and now fabrics. A few images from the book are shown below.

Non-fiction suggestions.

Rick Rubin’s book is wonderful when one is searching for creative inspiration. It is broken up into short excerpts to jump start the creative process. Mr. Rubin offers a lot to ponder.

Monsters tackles the complex issue of how to feel about art made by individuals with dark behavior. The author focuses on Roman Polanski, Picasso, Woody Allen, and Sylvia Plath just to name a few.

Mr. Gladwell has written another one – just as strong as his previous titles. The subject matter focuses on people making assumptions about strangers and the consequences of such. Examples include the sexual abuse by Jerry Sandusky and Larry Nassar, the accusations against Amanda Knox, and the political dominance of Adolf Hitler and Fidel Castro. The topic is fascinating making the book very readable.

Lastly, can anyone have enough books about Frida?  You can read about this one here.

Casa V Interiors draws inspiration from many sources to create sophisticated interiors for clients.
