Celebrating nature’s magic and mystery: El Real Jardín Botánico

Visiting El Real Jardín Botánico in Madrid provides a respite from the hard surfaces of a large urban environment by immersing the guest in a sea of green and a vacuum of quiet pierced by the chirping of birds.

In honor of Earth Day yesterday the feature today will be El Real Jardín Botánico. On a recent visit to see my daughter, she and I stopped into Madrid’s botanical garden. After two full days of shopping, we felt the need for some cultural cleansing as guilt was looming. Our first thought was to visit a new museum, but we found it closed. The nearby botanical garden was our backup option. What a spectacle spot we found it to be.

Every season provides a new sight to see within the Jardín.

The garden would now be bursting with tulips, but in March the daffodils were reigning.

The hellebores were out in force as was this unknown to me yellow flowered sedum-looking plant.

The roses were just beginning to come out of dormancy. The tulips were keeping their heads hidden a bit longer.

The paths are punctuated with understated yet beautiful water features every so often.

Towards the end of the garden lay a vegetable and citrus garden. No picking allowed.

The vegetables had their own protective scarecrow.

El Real Jardín Botánico was also home to local fauna.

This enormous bird is like an orca within the bird world.

Numerous cats made their way through the Jardín. They were a bit skittish wanting nothing to do with us. They were quite comfortable with a woman who must surely visit regularly. They would rub up against her legs while threading through them.

The Jardín is a lovely large green space within the city, but in Madrid there are numerous tiny parks or even corners where a fountain will provide a touch of beauty. What a difference it makes to everyday life by injecting a bit of garden wherever possible. The smaller scaled buildings and attention to green space make Madrid a very nice city in which to live.
